Country Calling Codes vs. Area Codes

A country calling code routes a call to a country or shared numbering plan. An area code is part of the national number that follows it. The digits can look similar, so the position of the plus sign and the next digits matter.

Is +1 220 an Ohio number or a Gambian number?

+1 220 begins with the North American country calling code +1. The following 220 is an area code assigned to Ohio. By contrast, +220 is the country calling code for The Gambia. The rest of that number follows The Gambia’s numbering plan. A call display may omit spaces, so read the full prefix before drawing a conclusion.

What about +20 and +44 20?

+20 is Egypt’s country calling code. +44 is the United Kingdom’s country calling code; 20 following +44 is the London geographic area code written without its domestic leading zero. Within the UK, that London code is commonly written 020. Ofcom lists 020 as London.

Does +1 always mean the United States?

No. The North American Numbering Plan uses +1 across the United States, Canada, and other participating countries and territories. Look at the following area code for the numbering assignment, then verify the caller or business independently. A displayed number may be spoofed and does not prove where the caller is.
